Tremendous Tringale ties course record

Nine birdies in 11 holes from the fifth saw American Cameron Tringale storm into the lead early on Thursday. He kept the bogeys off his card with some excellent par saves before birdieing the fifth, seventh and eighth to turn in 32. He then began the back nine with six consecutive birdies to put the Scottish crowd on 59 watch. But even though he gave himself a great birdie chance at the 16th, he had to settle for three closing pars, a flawless 61 and a share of the course record. As the wind picked up later in the day, no-one was able to get close to Tringale, who held a three-shot overnight lead. "It was a lot of fun," said Tringale. "I was really hot with the putter and my ball-striking matched up as well and I gave myself tons of chances and it was just one of those days when they all found the hole."

Nacho agonisingly close to miracle birdie

Nacho Elvira got away with one at the 17th on day one. The Spaniard's tee-shot to the 195-yard par-three was way off target and clattered the grandstand back left before bouncing all the way across the green into the rough short and left. But his touch from there was excellent and he almost holed the chip before tapping in for par.

Fitzpatrick gets excellent reception

Last year's runner-up Matt Fitzpatrick returned to The Renaissance Club as a Major Champion after winning the U.S. Open Championship last month. Playing on British soil this week for the first time since that glorious day at The Country Club, Brookline, Fitzpatrick received loud cheers and warm applause on his homecoming.

What are the odds?

Will Zalatoris' fourth shot at the 16th hit the hole but didn't drop, sailing seven feet past before eventually coming to rest directly on top of the marker belonging to playing partner Fitzpatrick! Those on the green and in the commentary box couldn't believe their eyes.
