Tom Lewis said a hot putter was responsible for a sensational 61 on Saturday that propelled him up the WGC-FedEx St Jude Invitational leaderboard.

The Englishman began Moving Day on three over par after posting rounds of 73 and 70 on Thursday and Friday respectively but he soon charged into the red numbers after making five birdies in a row from the 12th - his third hole of the day.

A bogey on the 18th threatened to stall his momentum but he bounced back with two consecutive birdies at the second and third before repeating the trick on the sixth and seventh.

Lewis then rolled in from 16 feet for a closing birdie at the ninth to head into the final round on six under par, just six shots behind leader Brendon Todd.

After making ten birdies and just a single bogey to shoot the best round of the day at TPC Southwind, Lewis said: "It was really nice.

"It didn't look good this morning with the rain coming down but it wasn't very windy out there. The greens softened up a tiny bit.

"I holed putts at the right time and it was great.

"I think when you shoot a score like that, everything's got to go your way.

"When I was out of position I was able to recover well, like at the 17th.

"The 18th is a tough tee shot. Unfortunately I was in the lip of the bunker, but other than that I was just really happy with everything.

"My putting was on point, I hit a lot of good shots - the greens are perfect.

"If you don't get it on line, good speed, it's not going to go in, it's not going to come back, so obviously I was rolling it well.

"My other two rounds haven't been so good, so I'm not expecting to shoot another nine under, but if I can get in the red in the 60s, it will be a good week for me."
