#GolfForGood: Cassidy named first local hero winner at Betfred British Masters

Nick Cassidy has been named as the first local hero to be rewarded as the European Tour’s new ‘Golf for Good’ initiative launched this week at the Betfred British Masters hosted by Lee Westwood.

One of the key pillars of the Golf for Good initiative is rewarding everyday heroes of the Covid 19 pandemic with unforgettable experiences and prizes.

During all six events in the new UK Swing, the European Tour is inviting fans to nominate everyday heroes who have had a positive impact on their community in recent months.

After being nominated by his girlfriend Lydia Turl, Nick Cassidy was named as the first winner, and will enjoy a socially distanced round of golf with former World Number One and Ryder Cup legend Lee Westwood at Close House.

Cassidy, 23, works for Newcastle United Foundation, a charity which uses the local passion for football to make a difference and help people achieve their goals on the pitch, in the classroom and in life.

“Nick’s day to day job focuses on working with vulnerable young people aged between 8-14 years who have been involved in crime or are on the verge of falling into or being groomed into criminality,” Turls nomination read.

“Nick works with young people on aspects such as their confidence, behaviour and decision making while supporting them to make better life choices.

“During the COVID-19 pandemic Nick has also been calling Newcastle United season ticket holders over the age of 70 who may be vulnerable and alone during the lockdown period.”

A big golf fan, Cassidy was rendered nearly speechless when he received a video call from Westwood, who informed him a round of golf was not the only prize he was being rewarded with for his work.

In addition, Cassidy has been granted a year’s membership to Close House, which boasts the 18 hole Lee Westwood Championship Colt and Filly courses and the nine hole Yearling course. He also wins a year's supply of Callaway Chrome Soft golf balls courtesy of European Tour Official Partner Callaway.

‘I honestly don’t know what to say,” Cassidy told Westwood. “Nobody will be able to say that I’m often speechless. It means the world to me.”

‘You deserve it for all the work you’ve been doing,’ Westwood responded.

Exciting experiences and prizes will be announced during all six events in the UK Swing, which are:

• Betfred British Masters hosted by Lee Westwood, Close House, near Newcastle - July 22-25

• Hero Open, Forest of Arden Marriott Hotel & Country Club, Birmingham – July 30-August 2
